Cyber Crime on the Rise: A Call for Vigilance and Stronger Measures

In recent times, the district has witnessed an alarming surge in cybercrime, a trend that has left citizens vulnerable to a variety of online threats. According to Professor Kislay Suryavanshi, a respected academic and expert in cyber law, these crimes are not only causing significant financial losses but also inflicting severe mental and emotional distress on the victims. The criminals behind these acts are constantly evolving their tactics, making it increasingly difficult for the authorities to keep up.

Professor Suryavanshi emphasizes that the penal provisions under the Information Technology Act of 2000 (IT Act 2000) need to be significantly strengthened to address the growing menace of cybercrime. He advocates for more stringent laws that can effectively deter potential offenders. “The current legal framework is not enough to combat the sophisticated techniques being used by cybercriminals today,” he warns.

To mitigate the risks, Prof. Suryavanshi suggests that financial transactions should be conducted directly whenever possible. By avoiding intermediaries, individuals can reduce their exposure to fraud and other financial losses. He also stresses the importance of raising public awareness about cybercrime. Organizing educational camps and workshops can help equip the common people with the knowledge and tools needed to protect themselves from online threats.

Particularly concerning is the fact that women and girls are disproportionately affected by cybercrimes such as cyberstalking, cyberbullying, sexual extortion, hacking, and phishing. Prof. Suryavanshi points out that this demographic is more frequently targeted than men, underscoring the need for tailored protective measures to safeguard vulnerable groups.

The professor also calls on the administration to adopt new strategies to tackle the issue. He argues that the authorities must become more technologically advanced and adopt high-tech solutions to stay ahead of cybercriminals. Additionally, he highlights the responsibility of telecom companies and banks in this fight, urging them to implement stricter regulations and more secure practices.

“It is imperative that we all work together to combat this growing threat,” Prof. Suryavanshi insists. “If we fail to act now, the future of our society, particularly the safety and security of our children, will be at great risk.”

The professor’s warning is clear: without collective action and a concerted effort to enhance both legal and technological defences, the district could face dire consequences as cybercrime continues to escalate. The time to act is now, and it begins with stronger laws, better technology, and increased public awareness.
